Woman at the Well
(The Samaritan Woman)
Her story is found in John 4:3-30.

This is one of my newer characters. After the creation of the original four characters, done out of necessity, I found it more difficult to develop other ones. Even though the idea would come to me about which woman to portray, I would have difficulty deciding how to tell the story, or was stymied about her personality. So I would just carry her around with me, sometimes for years. It wasn't necessary for me to figure out how to tell this story, it was already completely told in scripture. But I just couldn't find this woman's voice. Then one day I was driving in the car, and I started saying "You're a Jew and I'm a Samaritan, and you are asking me for a drink?" It came out with a Brooklyn accent! Wow, that was a surprise to me. But when I thought about it further, it made sense to me. This woman had been married five times – any woman who has had five husbands must be a tough cookie!

There were two things that really spoke to me about this story. First, I found it remarkable that Jesus would take the time to reveal himself to her. Second, that her immediate response was to go back to town and tell all the people who had been so unkind to her. She really was the original evangelist! The fact that she left her water jar is so significant. Certainly, as Christians, in order to serve Christ, we leave things behind that are important to us. The disciples did, and so must we.
