Puah

She is found in Exodus 1:15-22.

Puah

Puah

Who? Puah sounds like a noise you might make when you sneeze! But she is a little-known Biblical woman with a big message. Puah was a midwife to the Hebrew women in Egypt.

The Pharaoh (king) of Egypt has forgotten how the Hebrew people had come to live in Egypt and in his paranoia, he feels threatened by them. So, he decides to oppress them. But slavery does not break their spirit. His next idea was a diabolical one, which requires the assistance of the midwives – kill the Hebrew baby boys! When Puah and Shiphrah are commanded by Pharaoh to execute his plan, they have to make a decision. Most people would just do what the king demands, but these two brave women disobey him, placing their own lives in peril, because they feared God more than Pharaoh.

This story has a valuable lesson. How often are we faced with making a decision to do what is right, even when it might cost us something? Whom do we fear? Pharaoh or God?
