This was one of my original characters, performed at my church in 1995. She has become one of the most popular and beloved characters.
Only five verses in scripture tell about Martha's visit with Jesus. Of course, in John 11 she has another profound encounter with Him, which I recounted in my first telling. However, I soon decided to focus just on the Luke story, and to make it as light and funny as possible. I think this story strikes a huge chord among women. I do believe there is a great lesson for men as well.
Here is the scene: Jesus is traveling with his disciples and decides to call on Martha and her sister Mary. So there hasn't been a date set on the calendar, invitations sent or RSVP's received. No meal planning or shopping, no time to clean the house. There is an old saying: "There is nothing a woman hates more than for someone to visit and see the house the way it usually is!"
But that's what Martha and Mary got -- no notice, no time to prepare -- just 13 house guests!
