Eve first came to my mind when I needed some new characters, and I wanted to develop a program that really complemented Mary of Magdala. Mary is heavy and long, and up until the beginning of 2008, she was sort of tacked onto the end of other programs. So, I got to thinking, Mary was the first to see the risen Christ. Eve was the first to sin – by eating that forbidden fruit. And what about Miriam? She was the first to sing a national anthem. WOW! That would be a great program – First Ladies. And so I began to think about Eve.

There is so much bad press about Eve. I wasn't interested in focusing on that part of her story. What intrigued me was that God had killed an animal to clothe Adam and Eve before he cast them out of the garden. That's really interesting.
No, Eve doesn't appear naked - I'm waaay too old for that! Instead, we meet Eve at her first therapy session, where she tries to make sense of the mess she has created. It is funny and poignant as you listen to her explain how she came to be and why she took that fateful bite of fruit. But she also makes a startling discovery. God had made a sacrifice of an animal to clothe (cover) her before she was sent out of the garden. And there has been another sacrifice by God to clothe (cover) our sins in the crucifixion of Jesus. Perfect introduction to Mary of Magdala!
Miriam never made it into the program. Potiphar's Wife introduced herself to me during a daily devotional and grabbed my imagination. She became the second character of Fruit of the Tree. |
